Key Steps to Building Ownership for Your Legacy

Growing up, my grandmother often told me, “Own something—anything. Because what you own, no one can take away.” At the time, her wisdom on ownership felt like a quaint relic of her era. It wasn’t until years later, while confronting the stark statistics of America’s racial wealth gap, that her words took on a profound new meaning.

Today, Black families hold a median wealth of just $24,000 compared to $188,000 for white families—a disparity rooted in centuries of exclusion from ownership opportunities. Ownership, whether it’s property, intellectual assets, or community resources, has always been the cornerstone of generational wealth and resilience.

In exploring these themes for Black to the Future: Lessons from Black Wall Street for Community and Economic Prosperity, I’ve come to believe that ownership isn’t just a personal goal—it’s a transformative force for communities. Let’s explore how educators, entrepreneurs, and community advocates can leverage ownership to reshape their futures and build lasting legacies.

The Transformative Power of Ownership

Ownership offers more than material wealth—it provides control, security, and the ability to pass opportunities on to future generations. Studies show that communities with higher rates of property and business ownership experience greater economic stability and upward mobility. In contrast, communities with limited ownership struggle with entrenched poverty and systemic disadvantages.
